The Freedom of Information Act 2000 gives the public the right to access recorded information held by public bodies. It’s applied to us since November 2011.
Anyone can make a freedom of information request – including organisations. You don’t have to be a UK citizen or live in the UK.
This means you can ask us for any information you think we may hold in a recorded form. We’ll then tell you if we hold the information you’ve asked for, except in limited circumstances and provide you with the information unless an exemption applies.
You can’t access information about your own data under the Freedom of Information Act 2000 because this type of information is available under the Data Protection Act 1998, known as a subject access request.
We’ve always been open about how we work – and we publish a lot of information about our service in our publication scheme. You can find out more about freedom of information on the Information Commissioner’s Office website.
The Freedom of Information Act gives you the right to be told whether the Financial Ombudsman Service holds specific information - and if we do, to be given a copy (unless an exemption applies).
